Fourth-Year Walailak Veterinary Students Visit James Cook University, Australia, to Build International Professional Experience

Thirty-seven fourth-year students from Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University, accompanied by Assistant Professor Dr. Chettapol Pooljun, began an approximately two-week Study Visit Program at James Cook University, Australia, on 16 May 2026. The program was conducted under the academic partnership and Memorandum of Understanding between Walailak University and James Cook University.

The visit was designed to promote international learning and enable students to exchange academic and professional experiences with overseas experts. Students explored approaches to veterinary education, animal healthcare, and the diverse body of veterinary knowledge found in the Australian context—a country internationally recognized for its biodiversity and wildlife-resource management.

During the first week, students took part in a wide range of academic and knowledge-exchange activities. On the second day, they attended a Wildlife Anatomy lecture covering avian, reptile, and aquatic-animal anatomy, delivered by Dr. Orachun Hayakijkosol. In the afternoon, students joined education and learning workshops focused on the Australian context, introducing them to new concepts, teaching methods, and collaborative work in an international academic environment.

On the third day, Dr. Sue Medlen delivered Wildlife Anatomy II, presenting knowledge of Australia’s native wildlife and exotic species relevant to veterinary education and practice. Students then attended lectures and workshops on Australian plant studies and toured plant collections across the campus under the guidance of Chris Gardiner and Joe O’Reagain. They learned about forage plants, nutritionally valuable species, and plants that may be hazardous or toxic to animals—essential knowledge for future animal-health care and nutritional management.

Beyond the academic program, the delegation received a warm welcome from James Cook University’s faculty and staff. On the evening of the third day, Dr. Orachun Hayakijkosol hosted a Welcome Party to foster relationships between students and personnel from both institutions and encourage cultural, intellectual, and learning exchanges in a friendly atmosphere.

The study visit represents an important part of Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College’s efforts to prepare students academically, professionally, and as global citizens. It aligns with Walailak University’s policy of developing graduates with the knowledge, capabilities, and international experience required to become high-quality veterinarians who can work effectively in a global society.
