Fifth-year veterinary students have commenced their clinical rotation in marine shrimp health and production, gaining invaluable hands-on experience at the renowned NSW Shrimp Farm.
Students enrolled in the ‘Aquatic Animal Health and Production Clinic’ (VET65-576) recently participated in an extensive field practicum at NSW Shrimp Farm. This immersive program offered 5th-year veterinary students a comprehensive look into marine shrimp aquaculture and health management systems.
Throughout the session, students honed critical technical skills, including the health assessment of post-larval shrimp, environmental water and pond-soil sampling, and advanced water quality analysis. The training also emphasized diagnostic procedures, such as evaluating hepatopancreas and intestinal health, alongside microbiological screening for bacterial loads in both rearing water and shrimp tissues to assess farm biosecurity risks.
This educational initiative was graciously supported by Dr. Songwut Phatkaew, President of NSW Shrimp, who provided expert insights and facility access. Under the dedicated supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Chetupun Poolchan, the practicum successfully bridged academic theory with industry standards, equipping the next generation of aquatic veterinarians with the expertise and confidence to lead Thailand’s aquaculture sector.
