Clinical Professor Dr. Suwichai Rojanasatian, DVM, Dean of Akkhararatchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University, received the model veterinary award (professional dissemination and social services) for the year 2022 from the 45th International Conference on Veterinary Science (The International Conference on Veterinary Science 2022 : The ICVS 2022), organized by the Thai Veterinary Medical Association Under Royal Patronage, with Dr. Chalermchai Sri-On, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Presided over the opening ceremony and presented the award on November 23, 2022 at the IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center. (Impact Forum), Muang Thong Thani
Clinical Professor Dr. Suwichai, DVM, said that the award for model veterinarians is an award given to veterinarians who work to help society, can cause the results to be evident until it has a positive impact on the veterinary profession. ” I am extremely proud and honored to myself, the Institute and the field of dairy cattle veterinary medicine to receive this award. and would like to convey to everyone that the actions of individuals, communities, society and the environment All have a relationship that is connected either positively or negatively”.
For the 45th International Conference on Veterinary Science (The International Conference on Veterinary Science 2022 : The ICVS 2022) this year, organized under the theme “One Health for the New Era”, focusing on presenting academic information, research related to the control and prevention of animal epidemics using the One Health concept, which is a health solution concept that combines human health, animal health and environmental health for the development of good health in a holistic way. And emphasizing the application of the One Health principle in line with the current situation which the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives realizes and gives importance to the control of animal epidemics based on one health principle. Along with taking care of the well-being of people and farmers who raise animals to have a good living, have a stable living income for the development of the country’s foundation system and lead to sustainable development of the country.

Veterinary students attended a Small Animal Medicine 1 course on eye examination in small animals by Dr. Worakarn Boonho, a lecturer at Akkhararajakumari Veterinary College, a specialist in the cardiovascular system, small animal Medicine, and Animal Physiology. The students learned about eye examination in small animals and had to do a lab in small groups. That allows students to practice thoroughly under the supervision of a full-time teacher in each group.

Principle and reason

Nowadays, the problems with the feral dogs are steadily increasing in all areas and it is another problem that is important and affect people both economically and socially. In addition, dogs can be carriers for the transmission of rabies virus to animals, and animals to humans which is classified as the serious infectious disease that has not been cured yet. Therefore, the important mission for the control and elimination of rabies in animals is reduction the number of animals that carry the disease. Controlling the overpopulation of carrier pets, reduction the number of vector animals. These will reduce the chances of transmission and reduce the incidence of rabies in humans and animals. The most sustainable way to reduce the number of rabies carriers and to reduce the number of stray dogs is surgical sterilization. Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College has organized the “The volunteer of Veterinary Program for Dog Sterilization at Fort Ingkhayutthaborihan, Pattani Province” to allow stray dogs to undergo neutering surgery to reduce important vectors of rabies and control the dog population. This is a solution to the problem of stray dogs in the three southern border provinces that have been abandoned including creating experiences, the student’s mobile of veterinary medical unit, Promotion of the veterinary professional training and creating the pilot-project for the Veterinary Volunteer Club by integrating with Fort Ingkhayutthaborihan, Pattani Province and the compassionate animal hospital in carrying out such projects.

Objective:

  • To control the population of stray dogs in the 3 southern border provinces and reducing important vectors of rabies
  • To enhance students’ experience in both surgical skills training, applying veterinary knowledge and abilities to benefit society
  • To create cooperation between government agencies educational institutions and the private sector in animal welfare services

Expected results

  • The dog had undergone neutering surgery. This is to reduce the major vectors of rabies and to control the dog population.
  • Students have the opportunity for mobile of veterinary medical unit and practiced veterinary skills, and learn how to analyze the actual problems in the issuance of operating units and has worked with other agencies.

Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College has organized the “The volunteer of Veterinary Program for Dog Sterilization at Fort Ingkhayutthaborihan, Pattani Province” on August 24-26, 2022 has led by team of 10 faculty members and students of the college for allowing stray dogs to undergo sterilization surgery, to reduce the important vectors of rabies, and control the dog population, solve the problem of stray dogs in the three southern border provinces that have been abandoned.

Internationalization Skills are currently more important, especially when we approach in the 21st century world. English is very important role as the Global Language that is used to communicate in the world society and is reached people in the world. So, interdisciplinary students in health sciences need to practice and enhance their English skills in 4 skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing for approaching to their professional fields.

One Health is a concept that recognizes the relationship between the health of people, animals and the environment that are related as one. It has the important goal to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration of all sectors and levels to lead to holistic wellness. For that reason, One Health is an idea to help students in interdisciplinary health sciences and integrate access to academic knowledge, skills and communicate to society to work together to the holistic well-being.

One Health is a collaborative, multispectral, and transdisciplinary approach with the main goal of achieving optimal health outcomes. One Health acknowledges that the health of people, animals and our shared environment are interconnected. In recent years, One Health has become even more important as many factors have changed the interactions between people, animals, plants and our environment. The One Health approach can:

  • Prevent outbreaks of zoonotic disease in animals and people.
  • Improve food safety and security.
  • Reduce antibiotic-resistant infections
  • Improve human and animal health
  • Improve public health conditions globally

Therefore, in order to support and motivate students/interdisciplinary students in health sciences at Walailak University and universities across the country have practiced and increase their knowledge and academic skills and English language skills, the organizer has organized English Academic Presentation Contest in order to build up friendship between the faculties/schools in health sciences and universities in Thailand.

Objectives:

  • To increase knowledge and academic skills in health, one for students.
  • To increase knowledge and 4 skills of English: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • To create good relations between faculties of health sciences and universities in Thailand.
  • To provide the opportunities for competition among the students at the higher education level.

The college has organized WU English Academic Presentation Contest: One Health for One-Healthy Community project on Saturday, September 24, 2022, our college organized the WU English Academic Presentation Contest: One Health for One Healthy Community via Zoom meeting for students in health sciences, has presented academic knowledge under the concept of “One Health”.

Action plan:

  • Create projects and set up working groups
  • Public relations to faculties of health sciences in universities across the country
  • Faculty of Health Sciences in various universities submit the name list of teams and English abstract not more than 200 words with the following details:
  • Students form a team of 3 persons
  • Student teams can mix and match faculties
  • It took 1 week to select the abstract.
  • Selected 10 teams of students from the qualifying round for the final round.
  • Team of students prepare the presentation as the power point presentation to present for 10 minutes.
  • Organize the final round through the ZOOM meeting, each team has 10 minutes of presentation and 5 minutes of answering time after the presentation for 10 teams.
  • Announcing the award to the competing teams and The College would like to congratulate the award recipients as follows:
  • The winner is Mee Kua Lok team from Veterinary Program, Chulalongkorn University
  • The 1st runner-up award is The Beetle team from School of Medicine, Walailak University
  • The 2nd runner-up award is One Health One Jai Team from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chulalongkorn University and NPT team from Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University
  • Consolation prize is AVC Blossoms from Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University
  • Best Presenter Award is Miss Nogah Pfeifer from Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University and Mr. Nutchanon Imduan from School of Medicine, Walailak University
