WALAILAK UNIVERSITY VETERINARY FACULTY AND STUDENTS DEVELOP DRONE FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICATION TO WILDLIFE AND ELEPHANTS

[pvcp_1]

Drones are becoming a safer and more practical solution for treating wildlife and large animals such as elephants.
Dart guns are commonly used to administer medication to animals that are difficult to approach, but they have limitations in range and may pose risks to the operator.
Drone-based systems allow the operator to stay more than 500 meters away, increasing safety for both the handler and the animals.

The research team from Walailak University consisted of Asst. Prof. Dr. Manoch Yindee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuempong Wongtawan, and Mr. Patcharapol KhumNgern, a recent graduate. They developed a small drone and tested its flight by launching darts at pigskin from heights over 5 meters and within a 500-meter range.

The results showed that the drone could accurately shoot darts at a distance of 5 meters, achieving a 100% hit rate. When flying above 7 meters, the accuracy decreased to 70%.
Even at higher altitudes, the drone remained effective and did not startle the elephants due to its small size.

The results have been published in the journal Drone Systems and Applications.

🍖 Eating undercooked or unsafe meat
Examples of risk exposure:
⚰️ Burying infected carcasses
🥩 Consuming contaminated meat

Red bumps resembling insect bites 🐜 that turn into ulcers with black centers ⚫
May include fever, swelling, redness, and discomfort 🤒
2. Inhalation anthrax 🌬️
Starts with mild symptoms like cough and low-grade fever 🤧
Can progress rapidly: coughing up blood, difficulty breathing, chest pain, headache 🩸😮‍💨
⚠️ Can be fatal if not treated promptly
3. Gastrointestinal anthrax 🍽️
Nausea, vomiting 🤢 abdominal pain, diarrhea (sometimes bloody) 💩
Fever and sore throat 😫

CONSERVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY ENHANCEMENT OF SURATTHANI RED JUNGLEFOWL FOR ECONOMIC PURPOSES

[pvcp_1]

Asst. Prof. Dr. Warangkana Kitpipit, lecturer at Akkhararatchakumari Veterinary College, Walailak University, recently gave a radio interview on the program “Nakhon Si Dee Dee – This is Nakhon City,” broadcast by MCOT Nakhon Si Thammarat 📻.
She discussed the conservation and productivity development of the Suratthani red junglefowl 🐔 a native breed from southern Thailand with distinctive traits.

🔎 Key features of the male fowl include:
• A pea-shaped comb
• Reddish facial skin
• Yellowish-brown eyes
• Brown beak
• Red hackle and saddle feathers
• Red body, with tail feathers in both red and black
• Yellowish-white skin and yellow legs and beak

🌱 Due to its strong identity and adaptive traits, this breed has received growing interest as a base for local breed improvement. Conservation of the red junglefowl plays a key role in preserving the genetic heritage of southern Thai poultry.

📚 Asst. Prof. Dr. Warangkana and her research team have studied the breed’s unique characteristics to select purebred lines that reflect the original identity. These selected males are now being used as foundation sires in the breeding of Likhor chickens, an improved native breed developed under Walailak University’s breeding program.
